The Mindful Brain and the Stressed Brain

When we are feeling negative or stressed out, the executive functions of the PFC are inhibited and the information stays stuck in amygdala; it gets processed right on the spot as fight, flight, or freeze.  Fear and anxiety effectively shut down higher-order thinking; this is reaction without thought. Our brains and neurons get bathed in stress hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline.
